Funkadelic foi uma banda americana formada no inicio dos anos 70 que misturava vários estilos musicais, são eles: Funk, Funk Rock, Soul, Soul Psicodélico e Rock Psicodélico. 

Juntamente com Parliament, ambas lideradas por George Clinton, foram as precursoras do P-Funk. 

Teve origem em 1964, como banda de acompanhamento do Parliament, quando ainda não tinha nome. 

Seu terceiro disco de estúdio, Maggot Brain, é até hoje aclamado por críticos e fans como um dos maiores da historia da música psicodelica, do soul e do funk.

Don Glen Vliet, conhecido por Don Van Vliet ou Captain Beefheart (Glendaele, 15 de Janeiro de 1941 - 17 de dezembro de 2010) foi um pintor e músico estadunidense.

Seu trabalho musical tinha o acompanhamento de um grupo rotativo de músicos chamado Magic Band, que esteve ativo desde o meio dos anos 60 até o início dos anos 80. Van Vliet era principalmente um cantor, mas também tocava harmônica, e ocasionalmente tocava saxofone de uma forma barulhenta, sem didática, num estilo free jazz. Suas composições são caracterizadas pela estranha mistura de marcações de tempo inusitadas e pelas letras surrealistas, enquanto Van Vliet é lembrado como um ditador rude em relação aos seus músicos, e também pelo seu relacionamento enigmático com o público.

Van Vliet se uniu a recém-formada Magic Band em 1965, logo assumindo o cargo de líder. A sonoridade do grupo tinha raízes no blues e no rock, mas Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band adotou uma linha mais experimental. Em 1969 foi lançado o disco mais conhecido do grupo, Trout Mask Replica, que foi produzido por Frank Zappa, amigo de infância de Van Vliet. O disco hoje é visto como uma obra-prima revolucionária e altamente influente. Van Vliet lançou vários discos no decorrer da década de 1970, com várias mudanças na formação da Magic Band e com praticamente nenhum sucesso comercial. No fim da década de 1970 a formação estabilizou com um grupo de músicos jovens, com uma derradeira série de três discos com grande sucesso de critíca. O legado de Van Vliet é de más vendas, mas sua música possui muitos admiradores, e inclusive teve grande influência nos movimentos punk e New Wave.

Desde o fim de sua carreira musical em 1982, Van Vliet fez poucas aparições em público, preferindo uma vida tranqüila na sua casa em Mojave Desert, e concentrando-se na sua carreira como pintor. Seu interesse por arte vinha desde sua infância, quando já demonstrava aptidão para escultura. Sua arte é denominada como "abstrata-expressionista aestética neo-primitiva", e têm recebido bom reconhecimento internacional.

Captain Beefheart faleceu na California, na sexta-feira dia 17 de dezembro de 2010, aos 69 anos de idade, em decorrência à esclerose múltipla. Texto:Wikipédia.

Mahavishnu Orchestra é uma banda norte-americana de Jazz Rock Fusion formada em 1970. 

Banda criada em 1970 por John McLaughlin (guitarra), e composta em sua primeira formação por McLaughlin, Billy Cobham (bateria), Rick Laird (baixo), Jerry Goodman (violinos elétrico e acústico) e Jan Hammer (piano elétrico, sintetizadores). Essa formação gravou três discos: In the inner mounting flame (1971), Birds of Fire (1972) e Between Nothingness and Eternity, registro do concerto de despedida da banda no Central Park de New York em 1973.

No ano seguinte, McLaughlin decidiu experimentar um som mais orquestral e gravou Apocalypse, com a LSO. A formação da Mahavishnu contava então com Narada Michael Walden (bateria, piano, vocais) Ralphe Armstrong(baixo fretless), Jean-Luc Ponty (violinos elétrico e acústico), Gayle Moran (piano e vocais principais), além de um trio de cordas formado por Steven Kindler (violino), Carol Shieve (viola) e Phillip Hirsch (cello). Além de Apocalypse, gravam Visions of the Emerald Beyond e desfazem a formação.

Em 1976, McLaughlin, já próximo das sonoridades religiosas hindus, decide fazer uma volta à Mahavishnu "elétrica", convocando Ralphe Armstrong, Narada Michael Walden e o tecladista Stu Goldberg para gravar Inner Worlds, um disco de jazz-rock bastante eletrificado e com boa experimentação eletrônica. Após a participação da banda no Festival de Ealing (Inglaterra), no entanto, McLaughlin arquiva a Mahavishnu.

Em 1984, após um longo namoro com o jazz europeu e sonoridades acústicas, John McLaughlin reinventa a Mahavishnu Orchestra, com as participações de Mitchell Forman (teclados), Billy Cobham (bateria), Bill Evans (saxofone) e o menino prodígio Jonas Hellborg (baixo).
