Spooky Tooth

Spooky Tooth foi uma banda britânica de rock progressivo formada em 1967, na Inglaterra. Foi uma das pioneiras do que hoje chamamos de Hard Rock, Heavy Metal ou Rock Pesado. Influenciou de modo notável uma grande parcela de bandas e músicos. A partir da década de 70 emplacaram vários hits, principalmente nos EUA.

Uma das maiores virtudes da banda é a facilidade com que mesclam elementos como blues, rock progressivo e rock´n´roll. Para muitos (que a considera no mesmo patamar de "The Who", "Doors", "Yardbirds", etc.) a banda é injustiçada no meio do Rock, pois nunca teve o merecido reconhecimento, principalmente no Brasil.

Em dois anos apenas conseguiam fazer tres lps e se destacar no competitivo universo rock progressivo na Inglaterra. As composições de Gary Wright, como “Sunshine Help me”, “Better by ou, better than me” e “Hangman, hang my shell on a tree”, foram os carros-chefes para que o Spooky Tooth obtivesse aceitação, em sua primeira formação no período 1968/70, inclusive fazendo uma apresentação no templo da música francesa, 1 (Olympia, em Paris, a 12 de outubro de 1969.

No final daquele ano, o grupo desenvolveu algumas experiências de música eletrônica, em colaboração com um respeitável músico contemporâneo francês, Pierre Henry, Gary Wright criaria depois uma “Cerimônia Pop” que teve uma grande promoção na Europa. Nesta época, Greg Riddley deixou o conjunto para formar o Humble Pie e foi substituido por Andy Leigh.

Em 1970, o Spooky Tooth decidiu separar-se, mas antes fizeram um lp, onde acompanhados por três instrumentistas da Grease Band - Chris Staiton, Henry McCullough (depois Wings) e Alan Apenner, fizeram um dos mais extraordinarios registros de um dos melhores temas dos Beatles - “I’m the walrus”, com seis minutos de extraordinárias improvisações. Diante o sucesso deste último álbum, Harrison, Grosvenor e Kellie decidiram fazer uma tournée por alguns paises da Europa, mas que fracassou financeira. Da excursão participaram o baixista Steve Thompson e John Hqwken (ex-Renaissance).

Ao final da viagem, o Spooky Tooth se separou, “definitivamente”, cada um de seus integrantes seguindo um caminho diferente. Mas no final de 1972, o grupo voltou a ser formado, então com Mike Harrison, Gary Wright, Mick Jones na guitarra; Ian Hert no baixo (ex-Junkyard Angel) e Bryston Graham (na bateria). O grupo então denominou-se Spooky Tooth 2. “Witness” (Island Records/Phonogram, 410.040)

Nota: 

Edição americana do primeirão do Spooky Tooth, lançado nos States em 1971. Curioso que a capa e o título dessa versão ianque são diferentes da edição inglesa de 1968. Enquanto o disco americano é conhecido por Tobacco Road, o LP inglês leva o nome de It’s All About. As músicas são as mesmas, com exceção de “The Weight” que entrou no lugar da faixa “Too Much of Nothing” da versão original inglesa. É um daqueles casos em que vale a pena ter os dois discos. Coisa de colecionador, claro!
