JAMES BROWN

James Brown nasceu na Carolina do Sul nos Estados Unidos e cresceu num ambiente de segregacionismo e discriminação racial. Aos quatro anos foi abandonado pelos pais, aos cuidados de parentes e amigos.

Brown cresceu na rua, onde cantava e dançava para conseguir pagar um quarto no bordel, onde dormia. Aos 16 anos foi preso por roubo de carro e passou três anos num reformatório.

Após a punição, entrou para o grupo de música gospel Three Swanees, tocando bateria e cantando rhythm ’n’ blues. Sua carreira de músico profissional começou em 1953, mas só gravou o primeiro disco em 1959, e depois nunca mais parou, Think, é o segundo álbum de sua extensa discografia.

Após o assassinato de Martin Luther King Jr. em 1968, James Brown entrou ao vivo em uma emissora de rádio de Boston e cantou durante toda noite para conter os ânimos das revoltas geradas naqueles dias de tensões.

Com um sucesso atrás do outro e uma performance arrasadora nos shows ao vivo, James Brown foi alvo de mais preconceitos. O governo norte-americano lhe taxava impostos abusivos e exorbitantes. James Brown vendeu suas casas e foi a bancarrota, mas pagou o imposto ao governo.

A carreira de Brown arrefeceu um pouco, devido ao sucesso das discotecas, onde o disc-jockey (DJ) tocava os grandes sucessos pelos long-plays da época. As performances ao vivo eram dispendiosas e diminuíram consideravelmente.

Com shows ao vivo, cada vez mais espaçados, Brown sofreu novamente com a discriminação, ao ser preso por porte ilegal de armas e drogas. Brown foi condenado a seis anos de prisão.

James Brown era conhecido por vários apelidos, entre eles, irmão do soul número um, padrinho, ou rei, do Soul, mr. Dinamite, ou o homem mais trabalhador no showbusines (hard-working man in showbusines). Brown, além de lançar discos e fazer shows, era dono de várias estações de rádio e de sua própria empresa de produções.

James Brown gravou mais de 800 canções em mais de 50 discos e teve mais de 119 singles nas paradas de sucesso. Todos os discos que ele gravou entre 1960 e 1977 ficaram entre os top 100 nas paradas de sucesso. Entrou no Hall da Fama do Rock and Roll e recebeu um prêmio Grammy pela carreira musical, em 1992.

Após toda essa conturbada trajetória, Brown marcou polêmica até mesmo depois sua morte. Por causa de uma disputa judicial entre os familiares, o corpo de Brown ficou aguardando o enterro, por mais de dois meses. Felizmente tudo já foi resolvido e Brown foi sepultado no dia 10 de março de 2007, na Carolina do Sul, Estados Unidos.

Mesmo depois de morto Brown poderia ter gritado bem alto de sua garganta, “It’s a man’s man’s man’s world!”, que é uma expressão que poderia ser traduzida para o português como, “É um mundo cão!”, ou literalmente, “É um mundo de homens! Homens de verdade!”.
